The Last Days of Zeugma

In 2000, the construction of a dam on the River Euphrates in Turkey submerged one of the Roman Empire’s great Mediterranean settlements: Zeugma, founded in around 300 BC. Before its scheduled destruction, a Franco-Turkish team of archaeologists, epigraphists, geophysicists and topographers was brought together to carry out emergency excavations. In 1000 years of existence, Zeugma came under Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule. Stunning Roman mosaics were uncovered and saved by archaeologists working against the clock.
